October is one of the most atmospheric months of the year. It might seem strange but it’s also the best time to plant bulbs for spring. While March might seem far away, early autumn is the time for planting spring flowering bulbs.

Bulbs are the easiest garden plants to grow, whether they’re planted in containers or borders.

If you want plenty of colour in spring it’s a good time to plant tulips and daffodils, snowdrops, Iris reticulata and crocuses- to name a few. Spring flowering bulbs, such as daffodils and hyacinths, are best planted at the end of September and October.

Now is also a wonderful time to brighten up your garden before perennials come up.  Not only do you get early colour but you can also enjoy the scent of the bulbs for example Iris reticulate ‘Pixie’ with it’s lovely blue flower or the more blousy Hyacinth Delft Blue or Hyacinth Woodstock for a deep purple.   Surprisingly there are also some Tulips that have lovely scents, try Schoonord a beautiful double white or for a rich red Colour Cardinal. Check out your local nursery or avonbulbs or deJaegar for online ordering.

There’s no need for your outside space to look drab in winter.
